Sarah Sudhoff – At the hour of our death

At the hour of our death is a series of close up photographs taken of fabrics and bedding confronting us with the reality and staining left after a death.

Death is like birth, part of all of our lives, but it is hidden from us nowadays. The Victorians were quite open about death – wearing mourning clothes, taking photos of their dead to remember them, carrying jewellery made from the hair of dead loved ones.

These poignant photographs show us what would otherwise be shielded from us, making us face the reality of the inevitable.
