I have been trying to find a material that has a good combination of strength but also the ability to capture detail. I have considered plaster but felt that it is too powdery, I used simple paper pulp with nothing added but this does not quite give the level of detail I am looking for. I also tried mixing paper pulp with PVA, and plaster to try and get closer.
After searching and experimenting with several combinations of papier mache i came across this recipe for paper clay.
- Toilet paper
- 1 cup Joint compound I found this in the UK at Wickes as plasterboard joint filler
- 3/4 cup PVA glue
- 1/2 cup White Flour
- 2 tablespoons Linseed Oil or baby oil
Soak the toilet roll in water, then shred it. mix together with the other ingredients.
It is amazing! it dries really hard and it is white in colour so can be left or coloured and it does capture texture! It can also be sanded.
